Well, some of you will. But most of you won’t. It’s not because you’re not good enough, it’s not because you don’t have the determination, and it’s not because you can’t write a coherent sentence and make it sound interesting.
It’s because you aren’t marketing your blog correctly. Change your methods and you can make money blogging.
How many of you are going to John Chow’s blog, or Yaro Starak’s blog everyday to read the next greatest piece of advice on making money online since sliced bread? Maybe your even reading Problogger or Shoemoney’s blog.
Now let’s say some of you are leaving comments like a mad man on each of their blogs in hopes they will visit you or talk about you, or maybe even others will see your name and come to read your blog.
What will that get you?
A lot of time well… wasted!
I want you to step back and take a look at what you’re doing. And I know what it is because I was doing the same thing.
You’re spending your marketing time focusing on the top industry bloggers and hoping by doing this it will get you some exposure, because let’s face it… it’s all about getting into your readers’ faces; letting them know you’re out there.
Now once you’ve had a good long look and decided maybe it’s time to try something different, come with me on a little journey. A journey into using your favorite online money makers in a way that will leave you feeling alive and on top.
All it takes is one simple method. And that method is all about commentors.
That’s right! Everytime you read John’s blog or Shoe’s blog, make sure you also take the time to look through their massive list of commenters. Click each and every one of their names, and visit their blogs.
Everyone of these blogs you are visiting are the ones you should be commenting on like a mad man. They are the ones you should be targeting. Not the guys that are already # 1, but the guys that desire to make it to # 1. These are the readers that will subscribe to your blog if it has quality content. These are the ones that will keep coming back day after day, even during work when their supposed to be doing something else.
Who do you think it is that’s visiting Yaro’s blog or Problogger? It’s these guys. They are your target market. Use them!

Yep…the reason why “big” bloggers are big is because of their visitors. They are the ones you should be paying the most attention to. Those bloggers you listed rock, but still.
Looks like you’re still doing the same thing but that’s what brought me here. Time wasted? Maybe. Does it bring traffic? Yes

I guess I should have clarified a little more. I didn’t mean to completely stop commenting like a mad man on the top blogger’s blog, only to spend time doing the same elsewhere.
Well said Steven. Just drop in and say hi. See you around.

I am doing a bit of due diligience before launching my own “Freak without warning” blog, thanks Steven_
Freak without warning? I’d be interested in hearing what that’s about.
It’s funny that the top commentators on John Chow’s blog are also top commentators on this blog as well.
Actually, its cheaper to actually spend the time to comment and get in the top 10 commentators for John Chow, rather than spend the money to get a paid text link ad to his site..
Never thought about it that way, but you’re right. A whole lot cheaper than paying for an ad spot.
I forked out $240 for a text link on John’s blog for a month before I realized that I can get one for free.
This post was a bt of an eye-opener for me. I really never looked at it this way. Thanks a lot for this perspective on the subject.
Just like I thought! I did a switch in my strategy within the week and started commenting in low traffic blogs owned by very agressive newbies…and our mutual traffic has gone up! I’m glad steve put it into words here!
Good work man and see you soon…lol
Steve, you certainly invest a lot of time commenting. Of course I know that you did not mean to diss Bloggers who are just MAD about commenting. As we all know it drives traffic. I want bloggers to This post is perfect example of benefits of commenting like mad and reasons why to read others blogs. This post is a win win ….. Lesson for all

oops, last post did not enter all properly…….
I comment to get input from other bloggers on my site. Ultimately, the traffic that I would benefit from is raw.

@Penny Gould: That could get really expensive!
Hmm…That sounds time consuming but can be very effective, if used strategically. I did try to visit few commentators who had useful/dialectical/informative/interesting comments to share but never considered visiting all of them. Will try it

I agree 100%! There is definitely truth to this. It’s much easier to network with those who are at the same point or have similar interests. No to mention the links to your site… Great point Steven!

I think it’s also very important to leave quality comments that is actually helpful to people. Everyone leaves their card in the jar, but if you attach a $100 bill to it, people will come to you for more.

I visited your blog thru your comment in Problogger and I agree on your post. I randomly do this and really works
Very interesting post. I followed you on Twitter ^_^
I looking forward to reading more here!
hmm… target those who are still aiming to become number 1? So, I’ll start on the commenters of this blog.
Steven – great article. My blog went from 200 per day to about 370 over the past week as I have had a few articles fly around stumbleupon and redditt – to the tune of over 1,200 unique per day. My question now is how to capitlize beside Adsense – which is working. Do I try to sell ads or go Adbrite, etc? My sunscribers went from 20 some to 140+.
I will keep up the commenting but other advice will be greatly accepted.
Thanks
