I live in what seems like one of the least technologically savvy places in the world. Western Kentucky. While there are many that are technologically savvy, there are just as many, if not more, that probably don’t even own a computer. And if they do it’s only to send and receive email.
So it’s no surprise that when I tell others I’m a professional blogger, they ask me, “What’s a blog?” I think I get asked this at least once or twice a day. But I find myself stumbling for an answer each and every time.
When you start blogging and interacting with the blogging community, you tend to not really worry about the basics, like what blogging even is, so when you’re asked, it may be a little hard to give a good answer.
What is Blogging?
I often go back to the answer that blogging is basically an online journal, except it’s not anymore, it can be whatever you want it to be. But this only serves to confuse those who ask me that much more.
Some of them actually stop listening and start looking around, trying to get out of the conversation just as quickly as they got into it.
To put it simply, blogging is nothing more than a website where you write articles and they display in a reverse chronological order. It’s a new form of news media that is controlled by anyone that has something to say, rather than a college educated journalist.
A Little Help From Common Craft
The next time you find yourself stammering for an answer about what blogging really is, send those asking the question to this post. Tell them to watch this video by the Common Craft Show, then if they have further questions, feel free to make an attempt at answering them.

This should be a useful resource to bookmark. I’ve just been blogging for 4 months and I have yet to fully convince my wife that what I’m doing is something worthwhile and might even earn some money in the long run. I often find it difficult to explain to her what I’m doing because she’s not that web-savvy. Her activities online are limited to emails and the facebook farm.
Well, that youtube video could probably help me out should she start inquiring about what I’m busying myself with after office hours.
I live in South West Missouri. I have the conversation, on average, once a week. I’ve learned to try to access the tech cred of the person. If they don’t own a computer, I say I have web sites. Leave it at that.
Even worse is trying to explain how you can make money on a blog. Most people assume you either charge the readers or sell physical items. I don’t do either of those things online at all.
Some people are asking me like this. What is Blog? Now i have the source to refer to. Thanks buddy.
I have a favorite blog whose owner is seriously ill – is what she’s written thus far permanent? I’d like to use her suggestions for the duration of my children’s education (we are homeschoolers), but somewhat concerned about how long the blog will be around.
Thanks for this informative post Steven! You explained the meaning of Blog very simple manner.Keep up the good work….
