About Me PageThis is day 2 in the “Building A More Successful Blog In 30 Days” blog series.  If you missed day 1, you can click here to catch up.

Today we talk about one of the most important parts of your blog.  Your “about me” page.  Many times this page or the lack of one, will cause a new reader to stay or leave.  New readers to your blog don’t know a thing about you.  They’ve probably never heard of you in their entire life, and you just expect them to trust you?

If you want a new reader to trust you enough to subscribe to your blog, then you need to become personable with them.  And the best way to do that?  Create an “About Me” page.

My most viewed page on this blog is my “About Me” page.  It has helped me to build a large number of readers & subscribers very quickly.

Reason To Have An About Me Page

Transparency

As each day comes and goes, the blogging world is focusing more and more on trying to be as transparent as possible.  People want to know what you’re about and why you’re blogging.

Engagement

People always want to know about the person writing the blog.  As with any successful person (actors, singers, dignitaries) people often times are more interested in someone’s personal life than they are their professional life.  At least until they feel like they know the person then that person’s professional life becomes ever so much more important to them.

Highlight Your Best Work

Your about me page is a great place to highlight your best articles.  Not every reader who visits your blog is going to see all of your best posts.  Some, in fact, may only see that aweful post you put out over the weekend just to fill space.

What do you think only seeing that post says to a person?  Do you think it would make them want to come back?  Absolutely not.

Putting your best work on your about me page gives those new visitors a chance to judge your blog for what it’s really worth, rather than simply from your off-day post.

The Parts That Make Up Your About Me Page

Photo

Adding a photo to your blog increases that personal connection with your readers.  Your readers are more prone to participate in your community if they know what you look like rather than simply trying to guess.

Blog Objectives

Why does your blog exist?  On day 1 of this series we wrote down our goals for our blogs.  Can you see another reason I had you do this?  As you move through this series on building a more successful blog, you’ll start to realize that your goals (your foundation) that you built in the beginning will play a major role in all of the building blocks you lay into place.

Make sure you’re as transparent as possible.  You don’t want anyone thinking you’re out to scam them.

If you’ve ever watched Monsters Incorporated, you’ll remember that the monsters scared little kids in order to power their city.  But you’ll also remember that when they made the kids laugh, it provided 10 times more power than the screams did.

This is the same with being transparent.  The more open and honest you are with someone, the more they trust you, and the better your results.

Introduce Yourself

This is where you tell your readers about you the person.  Not your blog, but you.  What are you hobbies?  Do you have kids?  Are you a business owner or do you work for someone?  Do you have a wierd shoe fetish?

Well, you should probably keep the last one out, unless your blog is about shoes… or sex.

Again, the more the reader knows about you, the more they’ll feel like your the best of friends, and the more they’ll trust you when you try to sell them on some great new thing.

Contact Details

Give you readers a way to contact you.  Again… more personable.  You don’t have to list your cell phone number if you don’t want.  You don’t even have to give away your email address.

Simply put in a contact form with a place for the persons name, email, and somewhere to write a message.

There is no telling how many times I’ve had readers use my contact form and give me awesome ideas for new posts.

Listen to your readers.  You are writing for them.  If they’re not interested in what you have to say, then you aren’t going to be very successful.

Be Creative & Unique

This is by no means a full out listing of what you have to have on your about me page.  Feel free to play with it and make it unique.  If you want to post a video of you and your dog sliding down a snow bank on a trash can lid, then do it.  Have fun, because in the end, what’s the point in being successful if you’re not happy?

Come back tomorrow for day 3 of our journey into Building A More Successful Blog In 30 Days.

Do you have an about me page?  If so, what creative and unique elements do you have on it?
