Seth Godin is one of the biggest internet entrepreneurs today. He runs a very successful blog and has written numerous books (my favorites being The Dip and Tribes
).
Seth Godin is a person who gets it. He gets the fact that you have to treat your readers respectfully and personably. You have to give them an experience they will remember. A sort of Buzzmarketing technique.
He says,
“One opportunity that’s underused is the idea of using cookies to treat returning visitors differently than newbies. It’s more work at first, but it can offer two experiences to two different sorts of people.”
Which is why a wordpress plugin created after Seth’s words was created. A wordpress plugin called What Would Seth Godin Do?
The Seth Godin Wordpress Plugin
The creator of the Seth Godin wordpress plugin states the function of the plugin on his blog:
“New visitors to your blog will see a small box above each post containing the words “If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!” After 5 visits the message disappears. You can customize this message, its lifespan, and its location.
New in version 1.5: You can also specify a message for return visitors.”
It’s a fairly simple plugin and takes care of the “more work at first” part of the theory. But I’m not talking about using the plugin in this manner. I’ve got something else in mind.
The Plugin Twist
Many of you who already read this blog know that I like to take a great idea and put a twist on it to make it an even greater idea. If you haven’t been reading my blog, you can always subscribe here.
I suggest taking the plugin and modifying the text to display whatever post you’ve previously written and are trying to promote.
Here’s an example:

Basically I modify the plugin text, so on every post any reader looks at, they see the plug for the post I’m promoting. You can also monetize this method by placing an affiliate link in it’s place.
I place the plugin at the bottom of each post because as important as I think it is, it’s not more important to my readers than the content of the current blog post. But you can choose to place it at the beginning of each post should you want to.
After having this plugin on my blog for a week or so now, I’ve noticed a jump in visitors to the specific posts I’ve included in this section. So I know it works, and I’ll continue using it until I see a change in that.
What do you think about using the Seth Godin Plugin in this manner?

Steven:
What a creative idea. Always thinking…I like it! I downloaded the plugin some time ago but haven’t used it. I read different posts throughout the blogosphere recommending different plugins then by the time I get around to looking at them I forget what they do. I like this idea so I’ll implement it this weekend. I am making some changes to my design this weekend also so great time. Have a great holiday.
Dee Langdon – BloggerNewbies last blog post..The Feed Reader Debate
I’ve been using the WWSGD on all my sites for a while now and alter each one to suit a purpose. I’ve used it to gain subscribers, tell readers about a contest, point them to a post, advertise, refer to an affiliate or even send them to someone else’s site. This plugin is a must in my opinion and the ways to use it are endless.
Thats a great idea Steven, I’m going to redsign WDS this week and move it to the main domain, I’ll be keeping this in mind, it would be a great way to let older readers know that i’ve moved, without having to redirect each page, thanks
