Blogging To SuccessThis is the first post in a new series called “Building A More Successful Blog In 30 Days“.  In this series, I’ll talk about some key things you can do to help increase traffic, build your brand, increase your profits, and much more.

I want you to take each day’s topic, and use it in your own plan to build your blog’s success.  If you come up with some creative ideas or different ways to implement the topic, then share with everyone else by leaving a comment.

At the end of the 30 days, I’d like to hear from everyone who partcipated.  I want to know what progress you saw by following this series, and I’ll write a blog post highlighting the changes that took place.

Day 1 – Setting Goals For Yourself & Your Blog

I could jump off into some key ways to drive more traffic to your blog, or give you the inside secrets to the best programs to join in order to sky rocket your blog to an increased awareness from thousands of other bloggers, but it would all be pointless, if at first you weren’t really sure what you were looking for from your blog.

So to begin our journey, we first must set some goals.

When you decide what goals you want to work toward, don’t simply keep them stored away in your brain.  Write them down on a piece of paper, and look at that paper every single day.

If you rely on your memory, you’ll never achieve all of your goals, let alone even remember some of them.

Creating Your Goals

So your ready to decide what goals your interested in achieving.  Now what?  It’s sometimes hard to form into words what your goals are.  In fact, that’s why most people simply know what they want but never write it down.

When you write your goals, it forces you to be more specific, and to really think about what you want.

Here are some ideas to help get you started:

  • Where do you see yourself 1 month, 6 months, & 1 Year from now? Aim high with this one.  No matter if you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.
  • What impression do you want to make with your readers?  Do you want to be thought of as funny or more serious?
  • Are you interested in gaining readers, visitors, or subscribers?  Which is more important to you and how many would make you happy?
  • Are you interested in making money from you blog?  If so, how much?  $100? $1,000? Maybe you want to make $1 Million!

When you’re making your goals, write down a general goal, then break it down into specifics.  The more specific you can make it, the better your chances of really achieving that goal.

As you complete each goal, put another in it’s place.  Your goal list should never be empty.  The key to being successful is always working towards something.  Being content with what you’ve already achieved will only leave you prone to having others overcome you.

Now that you’ve created your goals, you’re ready for the next step to building a more successful blog.

Come back tomorrow to learn a key element your blog needs if you want to be considered an expert in your niche.

What goals have you set for your blog?  Share some with us by commenting.

Setting goals wouldn’t be easy in my case. I run web design company and blogs with SEO, web design or just about blogging wouldn’t be a success. Maybe some good tutorials will work but who has time for it.
It’s harder to find a good niche nowadays and I have no clue how to search for it.

Blogs about anything can make you money, if you’re willing to set your goals and take the time to really work at it.

But if you’re unwilling to take the time needed to be successful, I’m afraid you’ll never be successful.

Cyk, first you have to define “success.” Because, if you’re talking about making money equaling success – I write about my every day “stuff” and make money. I’m a married SAHM who has the same problems and triumphs just like everyone else – only I blog about it (like millions of others) – and make money!

You say you can’t blog about blogging or SEO or web design and make money, but why not? Steven blogs about making money blogging…and he makes money.

Seriously, if you were so inspired, you could blog about dirt and make money as long as your readers found you interesting and you kept up with it. You just have to want it.

    So, do you?

Okay, my first goal is to jump start my traffic back up to 6,000 unique visitors a month (reliably) within the next 3 months. I’m not putting a top on that, because I don’t want to limit myself. From there, I’d like to see it steadily increase.

In three months, it’d also be great if I were tripling the income I get from my blog. In one year, I would love to be able to make $1,500 a month. Minimum. That’s not my top out, that’s my minimum.

I’d love to supplement our income more and to be able to get some things paid off and spend more time with my daughter and husband vacationing and relaxing rather than the typical 8-5 drone.

There you go. Those are my goals. :)

Great comment… and so true. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

You really do just have to want something bad enough and go get it to be successful.

Great post, making goal for myself helps my stay focus and great for discipline.

It is challenging to find my rhythm blogging, as I do run my own business and am a single parent. I find that I function better with structure and creating list help. Of course, there are moments of creativity that you should follow. Those are the moments that can take you to the next level.

you are so clever, 30 challenge, great way to engage your readers! :)

Mr Sanders, Great post! I would add that the goals must be measurable. If you can measure them to determine success then you need to redo it. Goals also need to focus on the end in mind or the outcome/results.

It seems a lack of time due to multiple areas of focus is probably the major factor that affect us from being successful. I guess we all need to focus on one things and do it well. @Cyk, its not hard to find a niche. You just need to expand your research a bit more and use your own creative nature to find a niche. Many are making a great living from their Niche website every month. I agree so many people are doing it but there are still many areas under served by various mainstream businesses. It your goal to find it. A great place to identify trends is amazon.com, forums, magazines, etc

you’ve touched on some good points. in relation to your post, my problem is relying on trying to remember the goals i set for myself. We all should write it down on a notepad, or sticky not somehwere that we’ll see everyday and try to progress towards it.

For anyone not familiar with the SMART goal setting process I would certainly recommend it as a way to get some structure around your goal setting process.

SMART goals force you to say exactly what you are going to do, how you will do it, and by when…keeps you from setting nebulous goals such as “I want to grow my blog”.

Will be looking forward to this series. Welcome back!

    Matt
