Run Your Blog, Don’t Let It Run You

There will by times when you really have absolutely nothing to write about, and you may miss your consistent blog post schedule.  It’s okay.  It really is.

Gary Vaynerchuk Says To Hustle

A recent speech by Gary Vaynerchuk has him telling everyone that in order to make it, you have to hustle.  And while it’s true, you shouldn’t let it drive you to the point of insanity.

I’ve had many blogs before this one, and I would often find myself getting stressed on days that I got writer’s block and couldn’t make a post.  I was taking the term “hustle” and applying it in an unintended fashion.

When Gary says your need to hustle, he means, work hard, work fast, and don’t give up.  If you happen to miss one scheduled post day occassionaly, it’s not going to hurt a thing.  When you start skipping weeks worth of posts, or never being consistent, that is what hurts your blog.

Most Readers Aren’t Visiting Everyday

Those readers that do visit your blog everyday and keep a constant watch on their RSS feeds at all times of the day, will probably notice when you miss a day.  But if they are this fixated on reading your blog, they will be back when you do get a new post written.

Those readers (the majority) that aren’t watching their feed readers constantly are the same that probably only read your blog every couple of days.  If you write a post everyday, they are the ones that let the posts build up and read them all at once.  In fact, you have a better chance of this group reading your posts rather than just skimming them, if you write less often.

With either type of reader, missing one day of posting that you normally wouldn’t have, will not turn them away.

So relax and remember; you run your blog, your blog doesn’t run you.

How often do you miss a normal scheduled blog post day? Does it drive you crazy?

I try not to tie myself down to lots of regular posts. My regular posts are on Tuesdays and Fridays, but I try to write these at least 2 days in advance so that I don’t get stressed. If I have any other posts I’ll post them on random days.
However, if it reaches Tuesday or Friday and my post isn’t written I do tend to get a little stressed, but because my Blogging is a hobby and not an income I wouldn’t sweat it too m uch if I missed 1-2 regular posts.

Over at Microblink we strive to put out a new post each day of the week and take the weekends off. There have been a few instances lately where we missed a few days, but overall it hasn’t hurt our traffic.

I also like your point about doing what you love. The authors behind our blog are passionate about our topics and enjoy writing each day. Sometimes we hit roadblocks, but we don’t let it frustrate us to the point it becomes a burden.

    Great words of wisdom!

@webdesi3: The bug turned out to be from the newsletter subscription popup. So much for that great tool. I took it down because the benefits of gaining newsletter subscribers wasn’t as important to me as making it easy for my readers to comment.

Too true. I do try to post every few days, as well I have my “week in review”. Well, that week in review sometimes doesn’t come out until Monday night (I try for Monday mornings).

I aim for 3 posts a week with my main post going up on Monday, however this sometimes gets pushed back to Tuesday. I’d like to me more consistent, but I’m still working out the kinks of a new blog.

Yea I try and have everything scheduled out. For example the other two guys that write on my blog make their posts on Tuesday and Friday and I usually make my posts on Mondays. So far everything has worked out well.
