The Do’s & Don’ts Of Monetizing Your Blog

According to CNN.com, there are approximately 150,000 new blogs being created daily.  That’s alot of blogs, which means, that’s alot of new bloggers interested in learning how to make money with their blog.

And that is why I exist.  To help all of you new bloggers take your first steps in this huge world of wonder.  So I have compiled some do’s and don’ts of monetizing your blog in the hope that you will start seeing a revenue stream from your blog in as short an amount of time as possible.

The Don’ts

  • Popups/Popunders - Popups are smaller windows the open on top of the window you are currently working in, whereas popunders smaller windows that open below the window you are currently working in.  Most of the time, these windows exist for one reason, and that is to advertise.  But they are annoying for most internet users and have been over-used so much that they are almost invisible to surfers.  In fact, most internet surfers immediately close a popup/popunder as soon as they see it trying to load.  They don’t even see the ads that are about to be displayed.  Popup blockers also exist and are used by everyone, whether you know it or not, and most popups won’t even show up to the user because of this.
  • Too Many Reviews - Reviews are great on a website geared totally toward product reviews, that is why they exist, and if someone wants to read a review, they will visit those websites.  However, as a blogger you can get away with doing reviews on your blog if you do them correctly.  Don’t only write blog posts that are full of review after review after review, instead write a review once a week, or maybe even once every two weeks.  Readers don’t mind reading the occasional review if they know that your next set of posts will be back to your normal topic.
  • Irrelevant Reviews - Irrelevant reviews are a very bad thing.  The last thing you want is to lose blog readers because you’re reviewing Kotex’s brand new tampons on your football blog.  Recently John Chow had a paid review on his blog that was about herbal medicine rather than his normal topics.  This threw a few readers off, but because John is so widely known and has such a large audience, he can easily get away with it.  He also doesn’t have irrelevant reviews more than once in a blue moon.

The Do’s

  • Ebooks - Give away a free ebook on your blog full of great content that your readers would be interested in learning, and lace it with all of your affiliate links.  Don’t sell the products or actions in these links, instead show the reader why you use what you use and why you love it, including rewards you’ve experienced from it, then provide the link just in case they’re interested in finding out more.
  • Banner & Text Ads - Use ads from ad networks, but make sure they are displayed on your blog in a place that compliments your blog design.  Don’t just shove them all into the same area.  If you’ll notice, you will see that I use a wide variety of ad networks to monetize my blog.  Make sure you don’t only choose one network or you’ll be limiting yourself to the amount of money you can make.  If you’re not sure what ad networks to use, here are my suggested money-makers.  They all seem to be doing really well for me.
  • Paid Reviews - If you’ll notice above, I said not to do too many reviews.  It doesn’t mean you can’t do any.  Especially if the reviews are paid gigs.  But don’t feel like you have to do a review about something totally off topic to your blog because someone asked and is willing to shell out some major dollars.  Be a professional and wait for the right one.

These are simply a very small portion of the methods you should and shouldn’t do when monetizing your blog.  There are many more tips and strategies all over the internet, that go into real detail when talking about each topic.  As time goes on, I’ll be posting those specific details for you.

Do you have do’s and don’ts for monetizing a blog?  Let me know by commenting.

The Dreaded Return of ShoeChucky

It seems like the Child’s Play saga continues.  Only this time at the SEO ThinkTank in San Diego California.  It seems as though ShoeChucky returned to take revenge on those that have ever threatened him or his family harm in any way.

I haven’t gotten word yet as to whether ShoeChucky was stopped and destroyed, or if he’s still on the loose.  Make sure you keep an eye out and notify the proper authorities if you spot him.

And by all means don’t try to tackle him head on.  He’s got more power and money in his shoe than you’ve got in your whole arsenal. :)

Blogging, A Life Changing Opportunity

Many people often take blogging for granted and don’t think about how it really can make a difference in someone’s life.  Blogging has the power to change the world (it already has), and the power to give you a life that you could only dream of.

I recently came across a video by Glenda Watson (The Left Thumb Blogger) on Problogger that showed how Wordpress and blogging has changed her life in a major way.  I was moved by this video, and I hope it inspires you to really go for your dreams, no matter what limitations stand in your way.

Here’s the video, please take the time to watch it.  And visit Glenda’s blog to learn more about her as well.
