Losing Your Job In A Recession

Nothing hits you harder during times of a recession than leaving your job on a Friday evening, absolutely dreading having to go to drill for the National Guard.  The only thing keeping you from losing it is knowing at the end of the weekend, you’ll be going back to your job.  The job that you’re so excited to have because in a time where you’re lucky to even have a job, you have the one of your dreams.

You have the job that you wake up every morning excited to go to.

But then you walk into the front door of the office at 8:00 that Monday morning, and suddenly reality sets in, and the next thing you know, your packing your stuff up because you’ve just been fired.

That’s what happend to me on Monday of last week, and while I’m still fearful of what’s going to happen with not only all of the material things we own, but with my wife, my kid, and the other kid that’s due in a little over 5 weeks, I feel like this is where I’m supposed to be.

Will I be able to pull something out of my magic hat in time to save everything?  Only God knows and only time will tell.  But until I have that good news to share with you, I’d like to give you some insight on to what I’ve been working on during the past week that I’ve been absent from this blog.

My Web Design Business

Many of you who are avid readers of this blog probably already know that I have a website design & development business.  It’s nothing big and I run it myself, with some outsourcing work when the projects require it (it’s the reason I can undercut the competition when it comes to pricing).

In the last year and a half while I’ve been focusing my time and energy into my recently lost career, I’ve let my web design business lay dormant.  Brushing off anyone contacting me for web design services.

But since I got “canned” last week, I’ve been working diligently updating the outdated parts and adding some new functionality to freshen up the business.  Kind of dusting off the cobwebs.

It’s all finally finished and running once again.

My Affiliate Program

Along with bringing my website design business back up to par, I’ve been spending some time working on an affiliate program to help leverage the power of the internet in getting customers and building my brand back up.

An Update On My Blog Series

For those of you that have been following my series on “Building A More Successful Blog in 30 Days“, I’m sorry for leaving you hanging, but more important things came up.

I will be continuing that series, so don’t give up on me.

In some ways I feel like losing my job will take me down a path that I’d rather be.  I’ve been given a chance to really push all of the things I’ve placed on hold for so long.  And with a little hard work, I think I’ll be in a great place in a short amount of time.

   It looks like you’re well positioned for your web design business. I’ll throw you some keyword anchored links to your web design site that should help you out search wise.

   Go after that local business web design market and learn how to do a good sales pitch if you don’t already. Times when I’ve been laid off doing short term contracts for local businesses helped pay the bills.

   Sorry Steve.. I was surprised why you were not posting after the last one on passionate blogging.

   It is good that you have already done some things before you were left alone without a job. Now it is the same case for everyone thinking when that day will come. We are all preparing for it in one way or another.

   Now let your needs motivate you to do things more effectively that you ever wanted to do. Don’t ever get discouraged for there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

   Just don’t give up. If you lose your job during the recession it’s not that different than losing a job in normal times. Sure it’s harder to find *anything* but usualy you’re not looking for *anything* anyway – you’re trying to find a specific job and that’s still possible (or maybe even easier – there’s less competition since people decide to take any offer they get).
