This is a touching story and one we can all relate in some form. Takes a strong person to open up like this. On my way now to Shoemoney :)

While living in New York City, just after the 9/11 attacks, my wife and I were struggling with a financial situation. I was between jobs and we just had our first child. During the winter we had no heat from October the the first of February. I took a job as a hot dog vendor but it wasn't enough to pay off our heating bill. We could only pay our rent which was outrageous. Once we got back on our feet, I made a promise never to go into that situation again. I have a great job now. However, because of the stock market situation, I have lost more in my 401k than I have made this year.

Great post, thanks for sharing your personal story. I've always said you have to see the bottom in order to appreciate the top, and I for one have a lot more perspective in my life after going through struggles similar to yours a few years back. Maybe that's what makes us entrepreneurs, we're willing to push ourselves to the very brink, only to fight back, and come out of it stronger and wiser in the end. Glad everything worked out for you and your family.
