Twitter is a popular social media tool. It helps create community, as well as draw readers to your blog.
As more and more users a turning to twitter, it was only a matter of time before someone created a way to make money off of twitter, and that’s where Twittad.com comes into play.
Twittad is a place for twitter users to sell adspace on their profile, and for advertisers to buy it. No, twitter doesn’t allow you to click the background ads, but advertisers are still paying for it.
Twitter Users
Here is an excerpt straight from Twittad.com’s website on the basics of how easy it works.
- Post Twitter account for advertisers to purchase
- Select your duration & price
- Wait for advertiser to purchase
- Accept or Deny the proposed ad within 24 hours of purchase
- If you accept, upload ad to the design section on your Twitter account
- Notify TwittAd through your account maintenance page on TwittAd that the ad has been placed.
According to Twittad, they check your Twitter profile every hour to verify the ad is still in place, update your account with a virtual balance, and then pay you once the ad expires. When your account balance reaches at least $20, you can request a payment straight to your paypal account.
It’s as easy as spelling your name, and you if you have enough twitter followers, you can make some really good money from it.

This is really cool. I didn’t know about this. This is news to me Steven. I’m going to have to check this out further. But I think it’s a great idea. Thanks for the hot tip.

Sounds good! But doesn’t that take away from the social side of twitter? people go there to sociallise, not to be bombarded with paid advertising? Or would people mind the ads?
webdesi3s last blog post..Measure your sucess
@webdesi3: Won’t take away from it at all. The ads are the background of the user’s profile. When you use twitter, you usually don’t see anyone’s profile but your own, so you don’t even have to look at the ads.
I am not sure who would pay to put an advert on someones profile at Twitter.
I seldom even see anyones profile page, and if it is just a text or graphic and not a clickable link then I am not sure it would be useful for anything but name recognition.
I guess we will soon see if this type of advertising takes off or just drops to the way side.
It will be neat to see.
Thanks!

@Sheryl Loch: You’re right, it doesn’t make sense, but people are already paying for it as we speak. If they want to throw their money away, that’s fine with me.
Are you using this already Steven? Does seem odd that the ads aren’t clickable, no way to track the effectiveness, but I guess advertisers will pay for anything if the medium is hot enough. If you are using it, would like to hear your first hand feedback.

I am going to let this idea simmer a bit. I’m not sure if I like the idea, don’t really have enough info yet to form an opinion. I can see everyone’s point though!

Thank-you for the write up on Twittad.com.
A little bit more info on what we have built. Advertisers can now search via keyword into the users personalized pages on Twittad. They can also search via demographics (provided by Twellow.com). As well as being able to search via Twitter users location.
Matt, you bring up a great point. The ads are not clickable. However, within time I believe that stats of visits to a users profile page will become available. At that point we will be able to build a more effective way for advertisers to measure ROI (atleast on a impression base).
Another 3rd party application that shows the background image from your Twitter profile is TwitWall.com. I invite everyone to check that out. This gives advertisers another site where they would get a ad serve through using Twittad.
