I think that learning to promote a blog is a really worthwhile experience. I love the blog carnival! I had no idea that such a thing existed. One thing I like to do is to write posts that link to popular blogs that use trackbacks (when relevant). Then just by linking to a story on their blog you will get a link to your website.
